We know that nutritional education and support is critical for the health of individuals and their families, especially in light of inflation and rising food prices.
That is why we partnered with the Mayor’s Office of Food Policy to produce a short video on Tips for Having a Healthy Diet on a Budget (8:27) . In this video, learn key tips from Kristin Cardillo, Program Manager, Diabetes, EmblemHealth; and Kate MacKenzie, Executive Director, Mayor’s Office of Food Policy, to guide you in your shopping and approach to creating balanced meals.
If you only have one minute, learn what they have to say in these short clips about Plant-Powered Proteins (1:28) and Fresh, Frozen, and Canned Produce Options (1:19).
We know that many New Yorkers face challenges around food insecurity and access to healthy food and nutritional education. We are proud of EmblemHealth’s commitment to this issue, and the programs and support being offered directly to the community through EmblemHealth Neighborhood Care.
In the first six months of 2023, Neighborhood Care worked with community partners to host 33 food pantry events reaching over 6,000 attendees and 13 farmers market events reaching nearly 400 attendees. These successful events have been in partnership with other organizations such as NY Common Pantry, La Jornada, and The Campaign Against Hunger, at multiple sites across New York City, including Crown Heights, East New York, and Harlem. In addition to this support, we also provide culturally competent nutritional guidance in our classes — such as Plant-Based Eating 101 and Discover a Heart Healthy Diet — and the Care team is trained to help with accessing SNAP benefits.
We know that health outcomes are affected by more than just individual actions, and we will continue to work across the enterprise with expert partners to ensure that all communities, including the most vulnerable, have access to fresh food, nutritional guidance, and support.
